Talk about a surprise! Going into SEVEN without knowing what it was and with developers Fool’s Theory only showing concept art made me even more curious.
During the PAX East 2016, We got a chance to visit the booth and experience SEVEN for our selves, and what a sight. The demo was mostly to display the isometric 3D environment, and a few quests which in the demo I decided to avoid. Lastly there is an also an arena which allows you to battle against AI for gold.
Let’s kick things off with the environment. When wondering around I was in awe at the possibilities. Being an isometric game you shift the camera all around and it just adds more to the level that you couldn’t see before. This game will most likely feature a ton of hidden items or even difficult quests to navigate through. In the video for example I’m seen climbing on a pipe, then jumping onto some scaffolding and finally arriving at a building. Now you might be thinking, “Oh that’s normal” but in realistically finding the angles to jump at required moving the camera around to actually get a glimpse of where you were going to go. Mix this with a quest and you’re off on one hell of an adventure.
The quests included in the demo were simple, Do this, Get that. At one point I decided to skip these just to go explore and see the environment instead. Eventually I managed to get to the Arena. This was an odd experience because I figured if I died, I would end up loosing everything and starting over, instead I just instantly respawned and went back to attack. I’m not sure if this was because of the demo, but could see this being worked on some more. Whenever you’re in a tough situation and in need of some gear or gold, just get in the arena and tear it up in there. You’re given the option of 1v1 or a Free-for-All with multiple enemies, and clearly the FFA was the way to go. More loot, yet more dangerous.
What I got from SEVEN was that it’s still a work in progress with no official release date in mind. The alpha was beautiful in terms on the environment. The inventory and loot needed work as it felt like there was just too much of it. But overall a definite surprise from PAX because I couldn’t stop thinking of the possibilities in just getting lost with the isometric 3D world.
Game Info:
Seven is a Thief-inspired, 3D isometric RPG, in which you take on the role of a lone traveler. You’re going to explore a nonlinear, sandbox world – the Empire of Vetrall. Classic isometric gameplay is going to be redefined. We have created a parkour climbing system that gives you the ability of free-traversing obstacles, of any height, horizontally and vertically.
The quests take place in a “beyond post-apocalyptic” environment created by the minds behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. You can expect difficult moral choices with unforeseen consequences.
