Just Shapes & Beats debuted a few years ago at PAX, but it’s the first time I got my hands on it. Earlier this year, our very own truOZ tried it out at PAX South and shared his thoughts. Now it’s my turn.
We hit up Nintendo Lounge in search of something new. At first glance, Just Shapes & Beats looked like a colorful and modernized reboot of Asteroids. But by the power of polygons, a circle, and music, it surpassed my expectations. Primed for local quad co-op, where ‘the more the merrier’ translates to the more people playing, the more chances you have to be revived. Just Shapes & Beats comes with a challenge to match its hardcore beats.
Be ready to shape things up when the beat drops. Become a triangle, pentagon, circle, or in my case – a square. The choice is not as important as the quest. Beat the beats or just get beat. The music challenges your attention span. Sounds made into color patterns that make an equalizer come to life. Creating a plethora of obstacles to chip away pieces of your shape. It’s easy to find yourself jamming to the beats but don’t lose your focus because it will lead to your melodic demise.
Just Shapes & Beats goes beyond the title. Though the music seems to be the catalyst of the antagonists, you can’t help but dance with the enemy. Jam to the rhythm and survive the awesomeness together.
