Developed by Sluggerfly, Hell Pie brought back memories of a classic N64 title that I was far too young to truly understand but knew something about it was just not right, Conker’s Bad Fur Day.
At its core, Hell Pie is a raunchy and obscene 3D platformer, where you play as Nate, the “Demon of Bad Taste”, who is joined by Nugget, Nate’s pet angel. These two are then presented with the honor of gathering disgusting ingredients to create Satan’s birthday pie. In order to get this done, Nate needs to venture out into the overworld and do whatever it takes to get the ingredients in time.
The demo that was shown at PAX East 2022 involved Nate ground through a toilet-based level fighting poop. Eventually fighting the almighty tampon. Yeah, just writing that made me question WTF went on during the writer’s meetings for the story of the game. They wanted gross, they sure as hell got it, but damn it was funny. If you’re a fan of shows like Beavis and Butthead, South Park, or Rick and Morty, you’ll enjoy this game, you just need to have an open mind and a sense of humor to actually proceed through because if this was the opening level, I can only imagine what’s next!
This adventure platformer features a swinging mechanic which is also expanded through the skill tree where you throw Nugget and use it as a hook to swing and reach further distances. Paired up with a double jump, dash, and wall-climb, you’ll end up using every movement mechanic made available to you to progress through these levels. There are also horns that help Nate unlock his devilish abilities, however, this was not part of the demo, just something I noticed while looking over the menu and skill tree.
If you’re interested, Hell Pie has a demo available through Steam. The full game is planned to release later this year for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox.
