Nintendo revealed Splatoon today with a scheduled release for 2015, and for some reason it really captured my imagination. It’s the same 4 versus 4 format most shooters have but with playful violence, which I guess peaked my interest as its not really Nintendo’s go to style.
I enjoy playing paintball, and in Splatoon you are given a paintball gun to play graffiti with! The idea is to paint as much land as you can while your enemy tried to do the best. At the end, the team with the most surface covered wins!
There are a few features to make you rethink your strategy however! Each character has the option to transform into a squid and move a lot faster while within your own paint color, however extremely slow while on enemy paint. In painting vertical walls, you also have the ability to reach new areas while turning into a squid and scaling those walls!
As mentioned before, its a 4 versus 4 game! In attacking your enemy, they get covered in paint, and explode, being set back to spawn. Making it easier to paint the area as there isn’t someone trying to take it from you.
When spawning back into the game, the Wii U tablet comes in handy as you can see all of your team mates, as well as how painted the map is. The best feature however is having the ability to tap on your team mates icon, and leap over to their area! This can be used in multiple ways, either you see they are having a hard time against someone, or a group of attackers, or they are in an open area which needs to be covered in paint!
