Just Shapes & Beats | PAX South 2018

Every PAX I’ve encountered an ongoing trend of one booth being louder than the rest. I normally walk the other way from these games. Not because I’m not interested, but because the amount of people surrounding the game is massive and it’s almost impossible to even get a look at what’s going on. However, PAX South manages their booths a little different compared to East, and because of this I went with the flock and followed the music.

The screen had absolute chaos being shown, it reminded me of a difficult level in Ikaruga or even Cuphead – pixels flashing everywhere. The point of the game is simple, avoid the red (or pink-ish) items. The red items come in various shapes and sizes, from little shots to full-blown laser shots that cover chunks of the screen at a time. At one point, the entire level was covered but a small area in the top corner of the screen. With three other players plus yourself up there, it gets hectic.

Every player has the option to “flash” or “dash” which comes in handy when you need to zip over to safety. It has a minor refresh before you can use it again, but it helps out! Then again, this dash has been the cause of many deaths, so use it carefully!
While avoiding mayhem, you’re also presented with some chiptune tunes that for some odd reason it just works. It puts you into a trance-like state and has you focused on surviving. It’s great fun and can’t wait for the game to release.

Just Shapes & Beats has a page on Steam, but developer Berzerk Studio has no confirmed release date.

Oz plays Rocket League and is very bad at it, but at least he tries. As long as there are games to talk about, he's in his happy place.
